- 1 box chocolate cake mix (or homemade chocolate cake recipe)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup water
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups heavy cream
- Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 13×9 inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, mix the chocolate cake mix, eggs, sour cream, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and water. Stir until smooth and well combined.
- Divide the cake batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- While the cake is baking, prepare the cream cheese layer. Beat softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until creamy and fluffy.
- Once the cakes are done, allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting over the first cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining cream cheese frosting.
- Garnish the top with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder.
- Let the cake sit for at least an hour before serving to allow the frosting to set.
