Description

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or homemade chocolate cake recipe)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or one 13×9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the chocolate cake mix, eggs, sour cream, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and water. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  3. Divide the cake batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  4. While the cake is baking, prepare the cream cheese layer. Beat softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream until creamy and fluffy.
  5. Once the cakes are done, allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting over the first cake layer. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the entire cake with the remaining cream cheese frosting.
  7. Garnish the top with chocolate shavings or a dusting of cocoa powder.
  8. Let the cake sit for at least an hour before serving to allow the frosting to set.
