Ingredients

  • 1 cup Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth (or water)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce or tamari
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (use gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free version)
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed (mixed with 6 tablespoons water to create a flax egg)
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast (optional for added flavor)

Instructions

  1. Place TVP in a mixing bowl and pour vegetable broth (or water) over it. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes until the TVP absorbs the liquid and softens.
  2. In a small bowl, combine ground flaxseed and water. Let it sit for 5 minutes to thicken.
  3. Add the flax egg, soy sauce, olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, sage, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper to the TVP. Stir well. Add breadcrumbs and nutritional yeast, mixing until fully combined.
  4. Shape the mixture into 8–10 patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
  5. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
